My name is Joseph Collins, and I am a professional. I have spent all my life believing in a hard day’s pay for a hard day’s work. Hailing from the Virginia swamps, I know not of evolving without pain, or fear. In the swamps, we were stoned – immaculate. The first time I ever felt pain, real pain, was when the maiden with the wrought iron soul tried to take me. She came in from the suburbs, trying to play a travelling Bible salesma saleswoman. I was digging a little down about an hour before she showed, playing with my friends, the wind pointed me to her direction – the bungalow that belonged to the Robinsons.
I went to investigate the home, after we all heard a begrudged scream from the Robinsons’ bungalow. Before we even reached the front lawn of the household, the saleswoman exited the home, where we all got a clear glimpse at what laid behind the façade she wore. Without the long-brimmed hat she wore, we could all see that she suffered from drug addictions. She looked so pale, so desperate, and, she saw us – me. I could see the hatred from within shown from her heroin-riddled eyes; it was being. We all tried to turn away from her approach, especially me. I could not bear to take another glimpse at the hag. Whence I turned, I felt a sting in my neck. It was a sting, and then a piercing pain. I had blacked out for several hours without knowing so. The hospital room smelt of sickness, death, and mourning. A residing sense of death ran through me; I was looking through a bottle neck at what had happened. I was informed shortly after that the bullet had made a clear shot through my neck, muting me for some time.
I woke up this morning, shuffled off the garbage from my jumpsuit. I walked outside my habitat – the slums, thinking: Today's the day. I then began walking there, to the nexus, to apply for my position as a recruit. I went to the table and said out my name and CID; the cop looked at the console, then me. He unlocked the gate, allowing me in. Now I am here.
